Meta's dos and don'ts for reach (official)

What Instagram for Creators recommends, and what limits distribution to non-followers.

DO: Create original, engaging content

Instagram says recommendation-friendly content should be content you created yourself or that has not been posted on Instagram before. Use Reels, photos, carousels, or text, pick formats your audience responds to.

DO: Keep Reels under 3 minutes for recommendations

To be recommended to people who don't follow you, Reels should be **3 minutes or less**. Longer Reels may still reach followers but are less likely to get broad non-follower distribution.

DO: Check Account Status regularly

Go to **Settings → Account status**. See if your account or content is eligible to be recommended to non-followers. If not eligible, review which posts may violate **Community Guidelines** or **Recommendation Guidelines**, edit, delete, or request review.

DO: Reply to comments (especially in first 7 days)

Fast, genuine replies signal an active community. Meta creator guidance ties engagement velocity to distribution. Aim for same-day replies on new posts when possible.

DO: Use descriptive keywords for discovery

Write clear captions, bio, and alt text so Instagram Search and recommendations understand your topic. Use relevant hashtags, quality over quantity (roughly 3-10 niche tags beats 30 generic ones).

DON'T: Post content with other platforms' watermarks

Instagram for Creators FAQ explicitly says third-party watermarks (e.g. from other short-video apps) **can hurt Reel reach**. Export clean files for Instagram.

DON'T: Use engagement bait or clickbait

Avoid "comment YES," "tag 10 friends," or misleading hooks that violate **Recommendation Guidelines**. These can limit Explore/Reels recommendation to non-followers.

DON'T: Repost low-effort recycled content for growth

Non-original reposts are poor candidates for recommendation. Credit creators if you collaborate; don't scrape others' videos for your grid.

DON'T: Ignore repeated guideline violations

Community Guidelines violations can lead to content removal; repeated issues can disable your account. Recommendation violations may still show to followers but not to new audiences.
